So…after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch…I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series…was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?
Thanks!
- Wipeout HD/Fury can be played using RPCS3
- 2048 can be played using vita3k
- Original/2097/3 can be played using any PSX emulator
There is also BallisticNG, which replicates the various flight physics of the various titles 1 to 1 (excluding Fusion), and faithfully recreates the PS1 aesthetic (right down to the polygons jiggling, if you want that). It has mods, custom tracks, crafts and campaigns. If the old graphics style does it for you, it’s basically endless wipeout content.
It’s insanely amazing on the deck. I recommend binding the back buttons to discard/use pickups, so you never have to move your thumb off throttle.
Other titles worth mentioning are both Readout games. They have an immaculate sense of speed, though have quite different gameplay systems and track design. (No weapons, strafing replaces air breaks)
BallisticNG really is imho the best Wipeout Experience on PC. But if you are more after the adrenaline rush of pure speed Redout is also a great choice!
Redout
Lol…I just saw that Redout 2 is going to be free today/tomorrow on the epic store. I’ll give it a look, thanks!
I saw it free right now and wanted to inform you lol :-)
Thanks…RPCS3 seems a bit not too optimized for the Deck yet. Just found out yesterday it doesn’t keep up as well as I’d like it to. Wipeout Pure on the PPSPP emulator though…seems to be a port with a few less maps to the PSP, and this one seems to make really good framerates (it indicates 60FPS…but seems a bit not too stable?), even at 10W capped power.
You can play the original PS1 version if Wipeout in your browser

I don’t know if that’s the ‘best’ way, but there it is.
On the big wall of TVs at Cyberdelia, the nightclub from Hackers.
I would recommend to pay a visit to Wipeout Phantom Edition.
It’s an enhanced PC port that uses the original assets from the Playstation CD and I had a lot of fun with it on my deck a few months ago…
The
‘Wall collision response options: - Legacy’
detail, is my favourite part of any README ever. XD
was 2097 the best one?
In my opinion, yes. It’s the one that best captures the feeling. It’s has that gritty industrial look and the best music.
The later ones are also good, but they’re a bit too “clean futuristic” to scratch my Wipeout itch.
First one hasn’t aged as well. Mainly because if you bump into a wall ever so slightly, you lose most of your speed. 2097 and onward are better at keeping your momentum going. I also love those spark effects that come when bumping into walls in 2097.
I just play BallisticNG because it has the best features from all wipeout and f zero games combined.
If you ask me, get a PSVR set up and play it that way. You might need a strong stomach, but it’s amazing.
Thanks…I meant for a gaming computer (or a Steam Deck). And without having to buy additional equipment…if possible.
I figured you meant something like that, but if you’re the kind of person who has cravings for Wipeout and you haven’t played it in VR, it’s something you should aspire to.
That said, I would probably look into emulating the highest possible system, which would be PS3 or maybe fall back to PS2 for a higher framerate. Looks like someone did some testing for you up to PS2 though: https://youtu.be/zlVWdk4i-1Q?feature=shared

Everyone sleeping on WipeOut 64, SMH my head
I’ve got nothing to add but thanks for this thread I love wipeout and learned some new ways to play it!
I would say the definitive PS1 Wipeout game is Wip3out: Special Edition.
Specifically the special edition as it comes with double the number of tracks where the best of the previous two games are selected for the bonus content.
Also the wipeout 3 soundtrack is absolute perfection.
As for how to play, retroarch is probably the recommended approach these days, PS1 emulation is pretty mature and has been for a while.
I found these some time ago:

https://github.com/phoboslab/wipeout-rewrite?tab=readme-ov-file
But I haven’t tried them myself. Might be worth a try.
The PSP ones are good too and a bit more modern, they run great in ppsspp
The collection on PS4 picks up the work from the fantastic Wipeout HD and Fury and adds the Vita game on the same package. It even has full VR support.
Can these be decently emulated on PC? I guess not on Deck.
Just FYI: if you’re gonna use a PS1 emulator, use Duckstation. It’s phenomenal.
Original wipeout? Phantom HD Edition.
Wipeout Omega Collection for PS4 includes HD+Fury+2049 (all of the content from PS3 and Vita), and a lot of the PSP content had made its way into HD+Fury iirc.
For everything else, your options are emulator or tracks/ships ported over to BallisticNG. IMO you can just play BallisticNG as is though, it’s an amazing game.
