Who reads this anyway? Nobody, that’s who. I could write just about anything here, and it wouldn’t make a difference. As a matter of fact, I’m kinda curious to find out how much text can you dump in here. If you’re like really verbose, you could go on and on about any pointless…[no more than this]

  • That’s the most annoying thing about iOS. Apple really really doesn’t want you to be doing technical stuff like being in control of your own files. They’re all like randomly somewhere over there in the chaos pile and that’s the way it should be. Also, they’re kinda locked down, quarantined and isolated, so that you can’t just go and open any file with any application.

Once you realize that you’re not really carrying a proper computer with you, you’ll begin to lower your expectations. Before that, iOS is going to be a royal PITA to operate. Actually, even then you’re not really operating it. It’s more like sitting in the back of a taxi that sort of takes you somewhere eventually.

It took them 16 years to get to a barely tolerable level, so I guess after another 16 it could be good.

  • Around 2017 was the earliest time I would have recommended switching. Before that iOS was sorely lacking many standard features. Apple tends to be around 3-5 years late when it comes to adding features to iOS, and that has always made it feel like a toy instead of a mobile computer.

However, nowadays you can almost call it a proper operating system that actually gets the job done. Apple is getting closer and closer one millimeter at a time, but they’re getting there. Eventually iOS might actually be good. For the time being, it’s a little better that just barely acceptable, which is absolutely remarkable.

For a very very long time an infuriating number of standard features were missing and that meant that Android was the only viable option for me. Before 2017 iOS was so much behind that I absolutely would not have recommended an iPhone to anyone who might have technical requirements of any kind. For everyone else though, it’s not a problem that you can’t tweak stuff you don’t know even exists. You just use all the default settings and you’re happy with whatever Apple decided for you.

  • I get those from my bank, insurance company and some other places too. I trust that their brand isn’t disposable, so they probably aren’t going to do anything too sneaky.

However, some random app from a random developer you never heard of is a different story. All of that is 100% disposable, so reputation is meaningless to a scam operation like that. Once they get your money, the company suddenly goes bankrupt and the developers disappear forever.

  • When I’m using VPN, my pihole can’t see the traffic, and won’t be able to block any ads or analyze the traffic. Also, some browsers use their own DNS, so the pihole can’t block that traffic either.

Other than that, the pihole is a great tool to figure out what’s going on in your network. That’s how I found out that an Android phone is super noisy in my netwrok. Then I installed LineageOS+gapps, and it got better. It was still a bit noisy, so I reinstalled LineageOS, but this time without gapps and no play store. It finally got to the level I like, but unfortunately the world around me wasn’t compatible with this phone any more. :( But anyway thanks to pihole, I was able to figure out what kind of changes I need to make so that I’ll get the level of privacy I’m happy with.
