Key word, is idle.
Synology… and HDD hibernation don’t really go together very well. If you have containers running, it won’t let the HDDs hibernate at all. And- I have a minio instance running.
Lets say, you work somewhere, that does, say… https decryption and/or logs stuff… or the firewall just blocks stuff in general.
And, you want to say, access that stuff.
Well, you can route your web traffic through a ssh connection, instead of it going out the traditional path. This allows you to bypass content filtering, etc.
Its, essentially like having a VPN tunnel, routing your traffic. Amazing feature.
I pay for the subscription solely for the purpose of supporting it. Most of the functionality it offers, just isn’t useful to me.
And, the best part- Home assistant keeps getting better and better!
I am still using a DIY/homemade one I made back in 2020ish.
https://xtremeownage.com/2020/07/29/diy-garage-door-opener-home-assistant/
Still works perfectly. Less than 20$ of materials total. 100% local control. Locally compiled, open source firmware.
Would recommend.
Cough… oracle.
Now, If only google didn’t give out information without a valid search warrant…
Or, didn’t sell your data.
System Certificates
Aka, you cannot untrust google’s certs. And google can do whatever the fuck they want, and you cannot change or alter that behaviour.
So, if google wants to publish a root CA, that allows them to act on behalf of any other domain, they can do that. etc.
I’d love to see the same comparison with more real-world use-cases.
Code golf, is mostly pretty simple use-cases, which have been optimized many times over.
When, you build out an application with a user-interface, proper event handling, etc… c++ is MUCH more verbose then c# for example, and they are ranked pretty close together.
Some months are better. Some are worse. With the heat wave going on currently, its going to be much worse.
A year or two back, I think I looked for information on them, and found a few people who disassembled them… but, the hardware was pretty custom and specific for the application.
That being said, One of these days, I’ll take apart one of the ones I have laying around here, and see if it might be possible to solder a esp32 somewhere on the board, to take control over some of the functionality.
hardware is more generally available.
Yup, that is the one missing piece.
I have been using the new piper/wyoming stuff, and it actually works extremely nicely. I am very impressed with it.
Can’t wait until we have a device, that is as easy/affordable as picking up a new Alexa… that works with home assistant.
Once, that problem is solved in a way that doesn’t involve soldering and 3d printing… voice will really start to take off.
Thats a shame!
Once upon a time, me and a few buddies had a pretty nice BGP setup going between a few sites.
He maintained two sites, I maintained both my home network, and a cloud-based router, and had my other friend connected up.
It was a pretty sweet setup. iBGP routing, we had a form of dynamic multipoint VPN.
Was a fun experiment. But, good things can’t last forever. So… my network is the only piece left.
And- I don’t trust anyone else enough to setup any access at all.
https://xtremeownage.com/2022/06/29/433mhz-fridge-freezer-monitoring/
433 mhz sensors work nicely. If, my fridge/freezer / other freezer gets too hot, I get push messages.
Backup wan connection and a LOT of battery runtime ensures I will know.
I have been waiting a long time for this!!!
eh, If your goal is to make regular expression simpler, a web application where users can click to generate things would prob be easier.
After nearly 6 years of fussing about my PCs hardware, I DID finally get a massive upgrade… and became the owner of some of the fastest hardware my company had to offer.
Compile times, and everything was BLAZING fast.
Then… cyber rolled out a few new security agents. Nothing is fast anymore. :-(
46 watts… but, yea, I expected lower.
But, suppose when its spinning 4x seagate exos, they like their juice.
It apparently doesn’t allow HDD hibernation while containers are running, and doesn’t appear to like to use any sleep states.
