https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polylactic_acid Is the most commonly used printing material. I would rather eat that than just about any other “food safe” traditional plastic in my kitchen.
There are other concerns about the actual food safeness of printed objects because of their physical structure being a harbor for bacteria and such, but ingestion isn’t one of them.
Old article but I’m sure the science hasn’t changed: https://hackaday.com/2016/02/01/3d-printing-fumes-new-science/
Basically, if you are printing with PLA you are probably pretty safe. But I still don’t think I would sit in a tiny closet and hotbox with my printer. An open window or carbon filters on your HVAC are probably more than sufficient. And PLA is the most popular type of filament, so you aren’t limited much there. Unless you need higher temperature parts to withstand sun or car interiors. Then you are getting into materials you want to start looking into better ventilation for.
If you are interested at all, the hobby has never been cheaper to get into. <$200 gets you a printer and several spools of filament to learn with.
Countdown until someone posts that you are already dead from bacteria in the layer lines.
I so need to do this for my toolboxes. I know it would take a long time, but it would end up saving me so much more time.
Thanks for the through reply. I had found some of those differences but didn’t know what they were for. Sounds like it would be worth it just for the better drivers and extra inputs.
Just tossed it on the conveyor belt like its another piece of luggage?
Yeah, they just tagged it like another piece of luggage and sent it down the line. One airport it got spit out with my luggage in the baggage claim, another I had to pick it up from the lost luggage office.
Honestly I never thought about putting it in with my luggage. Partially because that’s where I had the ammo stored and wasn’t sure they could be in the same container even if the firearm was secured in it’s own. I hate being in airports enough as it is so I try to follow the instructions to a T.
I might be wrong, I’m not an expert here and every airline has their own rules on top of the federal ones. But I have flown with firearms and they always had to be in a separate, locked, hard sided case. I don’t remember any part of the check in process where I would have been able to put the case back in with the rest of my luggage. I definitely do not recommend just plopping your suitcase up there and saying “hey there’s a flare gun next to my socks” unless you have a lot of time to kill.
Absolutely one of the Ender 3s. Easy to find around $100, especially if you live near a Microcenter. They are such popular printers that any problem you may have has already been asked and solved.
If you’re mainly interested in figurines, then a resin printer will give you better quality. But it comes with smelly chemicals and more work/cleanup.
