  • A ”smart” thief will just garbage hunt through the bins of retailers, find legitimate boxes, fill those legitimate boxes with junk (or a rock), then reapply the fastening tapes.

A potential victim won’t look twice at an unopened box. They will be blinded by the whatever % off from retail cost.

It’s a nice security feature but easily defeated.

As a buyer of used phones I always open the box, check the contents, and cross check the IMEI for any carrier locks. Also check if it’s iCloud locked.

  • yea I was using the display models. It’s not a bad phone but nothing convinces me to upgrade yet. I’m thinking next year will be the one. Especially considering XS max at the bottom of eligible phones for upgrade this year ha.

yea those third party sites aren’t reliable. The store I went to had a line out the wazoo just for pickup orders. A rep said they had no phones for people to buy.

  • I’m on a XS max (2018 release). Still going strong. I think this is the last year it will get major upgrades.

I checked it out at a retail store thinking it would change my mind but still not convinced to upgrade. I’m definitely thinking next year will be it. The titanium feels kind of nice in my hand tho.

Your phone will probably last 5-6 yrs if you want it to.

Apple standard is 6-7 years for latest OS support. My 2017 Intel MBP still going strong. Had one free battery replacement because this generation of MBPs plagued by quality control issues — butterfly kb, poor hinges, poor heat management, highly sensitive to dust.

Of course, it won’t get Sonoma but still very useful for occasional out of the home/office work (ie, airports, coffee shops, libraries, …). Plus since I mostly VPN into office/home assets, it’s more of a dumb terminal now and offload heavy workloads to beefier machines.

AirDrop has a new NameDrop feature for quickly sharing contact information with a person nearby, and the Phone app has customizable Contact Posters that let you choose what people see when you call them

I wonder if this is a possible vector for a “1 tap” or “0 click” attack. NSO and other black hat security firms can’t wait 😂

    Attacker:

    • setup malicious “contact poster”
    • call victim
    • victim gets malicious contact poster which is able to bypass security and achieve RCE
    • victim doesn’t even need to answer

  • A car not having Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is a huge negative. Car manufacturer infotainment systems are usually ass. Car manufacturers should stick to what they know — building cars, improving supply chain.

Side note: what kind of drugs are the Cadillac executives on? A $130K SUV? Lmao what kind of asshole would actually buy this behemoth of a vehicle and think “ahh this machine was totally worth it”. Do people really think Cadillacs are the pinnacle of luxury? I guess that’s the American vehicle market for ya.

    Fuck cars
