  • Oliver Habryka, the CEO of Lightcone Infrastructure, told SFGATE that he thinks the escrow company used to buy the property “has been trying to get in contact with FTX and return the $1M funds. My guess is the funds are still with the Escrow company, but I don’t know, we never had any of it.” He also posted a screenshot of a 2022 escrow document for the property on X, which said $1 million would be returned to an FTX-linked company called North Dimension. An escrow company holds funds for the sale of a property while the sale is finalized. Escrow in California typically takes four to eight weeks. It’s not clear why the escrow company in this case might still have the funds.

I’m beginning to wonder if ole Habby didn’t make a tactical mistake on insisting on this particular point with El Grauniad. OTOH dodgy RE deals are like what made SF.

  • If you’ve been around the block like I have, you’ve seen reports about people joining cults to await spaceships, people preaching that the world is about to end &c. It’s a staple trope in old New Yorker cartoons, where a bearded dude walks around with a billboard saying “The End is nigh”.

The tech world is growing up, and a new internet-native generation has taken over. But everyone is still human, and the same pattern-matching that leads a 19th century Christian to discern when the world is going to end by reading Revelation will lead a 25 year old tech bro steeped in “rationalism” to decide that spicy autocomplete is the first stage of The End of the Human Race. The only difference is the inputs.

  • Well, they got their wish, the Guardian piece is now updated:

    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/jun/16/sam-bankman-fried-ftx-eugenics-scientific-racism

This article was amended on 17 June 2024 to include a comment from Oliver Habryka about the purchase of Lighthaven that was received after publication; in responding, Habryka disclosed an escrow document for the property’s purchase showing a $1m deposit from, and refunded to, North Dimension Inc, a subsidiary of FTX’s sister company Alameda, which he said meant “the relevant funds never entered our bank account”. An earlier version mistakenly said Lightcone, rather than CFAR, was the sole member of Lightcone Rose Garden, and that Habryka was the latter’s registered agent, when another individual is listed in that role. A reference to Manifund as a “prediction market” has also been corrected.

I think the Gruaniad had a lot of fun with this. By hyperfocusing on the nitpicks, the rats gave them an open goal in correcting tiny details (who now cares whether any money from SBF actually entered the account of Lightcone?) but left the bigger details in place: namely that Lightcone is tight with racists.

Edit a few libertarians(?) in the comments are urging Habryka to sue for libel in the UK, totally fine with using the power of the state to enforce speech! He modestly declines, likely he knows it’s not a slam-dunk win (especially if the newspaper actually amends the piece) and that news orgs live for being sued for defamation. It’s the classic sign of a bully to sue, and it generates a ton of press.

  • I couldn’t remember who Chris Langan was, and mobile search gave me “Chris Langham”:

Christopher Langham (born 14 April 1949) is an English writer, actor, and comedian.

No mention of philosophy, but this turned up

On 2 August 2007, Langham was found guilty of 15 charges of downloading and possessing level 5 child sexual abuse images and videos.

OK so maybe the correct person?

No it turns out Langan is the person with “the world’s highest IQ”.

    From the podcast transcript

… if people look up Chris Langan on Wikipedia, under his views section, they’ll be like, ah, these are some far right views. The CTMU is obviously not about that, but… anything you want to just fill in for people that might be curious about that part of it?

    […]

When people bring up his political views, I often mention that Heidegger was a Nazi, and that doesn’t mean his philosophy should just be dismissed outright. I don’t think Chris is remotely a Nazi. In my personal interaction with him, he’s been a wonderful person. He’s been kind and generous with me, and I respect him personally.

No doubt Himmler’s friends and family thought he was a great guy too.
