Bleeping Lobster@lemmy.worldto Risa@startrek.website•We each have an important role on this ship we call the startrek.website instance.English5·2 years agoHehehe. Very good. I don’t think I’ll ever be Finnished, it’s incredibly difficult and daily I question whyyyyy (the reality is because it’s very embarassing not being able to speak Finnish when I’ve been performing there a couple of times a year for over a decade, while nearly everyone I meet speaks excellent English, classic lazy Brit)
Bleeping Lobster@lemmy.worldto Risa@startrek.website•We each have an important role on this ship we call the startrek.website instance.English71·2 years agoFun random fact, I’ve been learning Finnish for about 10 months, and it greatly confused me to find out they have a dish called quark. Like, what kind of society goes around eating elementary particles? No wonder it’s one of the most difficult languages to learn.

Why is it he – not Kirk, not McCoy – that gets called on when the showrunners want to “bulk up” on their Star Trek bona fides?
I think it’s because Kirk, McCoy etc are humans; when we think of Star Trek, we think of alien races, alien planets, exploration of new civilisations. The captains / staff change but Spock remains, because he’s an excellent bridge between the human and the alien; also, his insistence on logic which is tinged with human emotions makes for a rich potential pallete of storylines / comedy. Not to mention the iconic look which combines alien and human features. It’s familiar and alien all at once which makes it memorable.
IMO :)

The conversation between Q and Riker:
Q: Yes, the human compulsion. It is a power which will grow stronger century after century, aeon after aeon. RIKER: Aeons. Have you any idea how far we’ll advance?
Q: Perhaps in a future that you cannot yet conceive, even beyond us
She has one of those faces that can look so different with a different hair / makeup combo, imo. I didn’t recognise her at all as Mrs McMurray, despite watching the entire Wynonna Earp series. Though I did have a “Hey, I’m sure I know her from something” feeling in Star Trek.
In all fairness I am a bit faceblind in general haha. Also have to give credit to her acting chops as the way she holds herself / speaks is so different in those roles.
