  • Disclaimer I don’t know the ins and outs of HA nor have I used it.

I’m not sure if you have the automatic lock/unlock part figured out but that’s the part I can’t help with.

In terms of detecting when kid comes home, some ideas:

A low power esp32 board coded to connect to your home network, then if the device name or MAC address is discovered on the network, or have the device send a message every 10 seconds or when a button is pressed.

NFC card and reader in front of the door, can be “hard wired” rather than over wifi if you prefer. The card doesn’t run out of battery but access still can be assigned or revoked if lost.

A passcode: many hardware store doorlocks offer this, if the main problem is your kid losing keys. Then just do automation inside the house as you see fit from motion detectors or whatever your heart desires.

E: a few people ITT don’t like to have fun thinking of ideas how to use home automation, even if it’s unnecessary.

  • Learning a board game if no one’s played it before can easily takes an hour and sometimes more in addition to the suggested play time, to figure out the set up and fully read and understand the rules.

I don’t know what kind of friends would be upset at you being tired. The only time I might be annoyed is if you continually overcommit (ask to play a game you know takes all night then leave early).

I suggest you tell your friends whenabouts you need to leave, at the start and/or the middle of your hangout so they can set their expectations accordingly.

If the Alchemist game you think you would enjoy if you just weren’t confused by the gameplay, have someone walk you through it, looking at your hand/pieces and tell you what to play and why for a round. I think part of the issue is that you need to communicate early and clearly so that you don’t have to suffer in silence. A board game hangout shouldn’t be something you dread; if it is then do something else. If it’s that the game just isn’t sparking your interest, 5-10 minutes into the rules you can stop and tell them that this doesn’t feel interesting.

  • Raptor I tried with a buddy on a whim, it was fun, quite strategic, not too hard to understand after going through the rules once. The idea is that one player is a mama dino trying to get the babies out of the lab, with the other player as the scientists trying to catch the babies or tranquilize the mama.

The lower value cards allow you to do a special move that helps you, but higher cards will give you movement actions based on the value difference of your opponents’ card choice. So you need to think of which cards you and your opponent might have in your decks and each others’ hands.
