This was going to be my recommendation! A lot of fun and definitely a lot of Adams trolling the player going on…
The BBC put up a complete version free to play on its website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/1z6wqcbQx8V5bpfltD5PQBg/how-to-play
Interesting - I only played it irl a few times with someone else’s copy but I do have the digital version and we were having similar issues (including with quite experienced players of other games) - not to doubt your experience in any way. I might try playing on advanced AI if I have time and see if that makes a difference.
Because we do have one of our online group who is a massive fan but unfortunately it doesn’t really gel with any of the rest of us do it would be cool if we could find ‘a way in’
Probably Everdell. Just seemed to be very much style over substance. If you were lucky you could get some synergies going but luck is the key word there. The huge deck means there’s no guarantee what you need is going to come up in the game at all.
Kind of feels like if you want a nature themed tableau thing Wingspan does it better.
I’m not so convinced by the short article that what they are doing well being about a revolution, but board games have been doing this sort of thing on and off for a while. Evolution had a Climate expansion for example.
For me my Deck building option would be Paperback - the introduction of having to create words puts a really unique twist on the genre and also changes the way that you perceive the market because you have to make sure you’re balancing consonants and vowels to be able to make words in future hands
Might sound old fashioned but when we travel we usually just take travel Scrabble and a magnetic chess board!
Yeah, there’s an absolute ton of reviews. And there has been a bit of a dearth of decent board game ports recently - I’d like to see him review Unmatched, possibly Munchkin just because I’d just be interested in his take not because I have a love of the game.
And Wings of Glory I thought was really good but seemed to slip through everyone’s radar
Yes I’m not sure if he’s taken time off the site for a while or not. He’s still actively playing. It may also be because there’s been no recent releases that have grabbed his attention though
I love Burgle Bros! I really like Tim Fowers games in general, Paperback is really good!
The Captain Is Dead is underrated in my opinion - the theme is essentially the end of an episode of Star Trek or any other sci-fi show really but the main characters have unexpectedly died and it’s down to you to scramble and try and fix everything before it all ends badly…
It’s hard to win but a lot of fun to play!
I’ve only played it on my tablet and phone as it happens - I’m a big fan of digital board games. I think TTA is definitely one of the best for sure!
All I know is I learned RFTG this year on the app with a friend teaching me via discord and it was a tough ride but worth it!
For me or if the modern board games it’s Root. I love the interplay with all the factions with totally different goals to achieve the same end. The room for truces and take that moments, and genuinely gripping moments.
It is something of a marmite game and the learning curve can be of putting. But the people who like it tends to love it!
For me it would be Root all the way - especially with the expansions. It’s a brilliant adaptation! There’s a group of us who always have at least one game on the go it’s turned into a bit of an addiction…
Honourable mentions for Yellow & Yangtze and Concordia as well. Also solid apps for great games
+1 for Onirim! There’s a great app for it as well!
Yeah I remember learning it when I was young - kind of like a much better version of noughts and crosses!
