I absolutely adored the original Fantasy Life on 3DS. Loved Ever Oasis, too. For some reason, I always kinda viewed the two as a pair, even though they had nothing to do with each other.

Anyhow, I read a couple months ago that there’s a new Fantasy Life game coming to Switch later this year, and it really got me looking forward to it. I’m a little worried that there hasn’t really been much in the way of promotion for the title, but what I’ve seen looks promising.

Anyone else got this game on their radar?

Yes, this is the first I’ve heard of a second one and it’s the best news I’ve heard all day. I loved the first game and have been hoping to find something like it on the switch. It’s just good, cute fun!

Absolutely! I’m looking forward to it, and also hoping a port of the original. I’d love a port and or/sequel of the spiritual sister game, Ever Oasis, too.

My kid played the hell out of it on the 3DS when she was little. Now she’s not so little and she’s dying for a new version.

Not at all. The original is a 3DS exclusive, so it may be somewhat hard to get anyhow.

I would imagine there’s little direct narrative connection between the two.

It’s like Animal Crossing, there isn’t any story or narrative that you will miss. You can start from whichever you like.

I still haven’t played the original, despite it sitting on my shelf and that I purchased the DLC for it before the eShop went dark… 🤦

Are you planning on buying the sequel? And if so, are you planning on playing through the first game before you play the sequel?

I hope to play the original game before I ever play the sequel. Whether or not I purchase the sequel will depend how I enjoyed the first game. If I can’t get through enough of my 3DS backlog to get to it before the opportunity to buy the new game goes away - I may just purchase it (assuming the reviews are good) and add it to my backlog as well.

Having a family really eats into any video game time I might have had… Someday I’ll get to play these games!

I know the feeling. At some point, you just have to decide what to prioritize in the backlog, and what to let go.

Or be like me, and don’t let go of anything. There are game series where I have to play more than 6-7 games to play the current game, but I am still going to play them from the start.

But I agree with you. If the game is not fun, I won’t waste too much time on it. I have learned to leave the game midway if they aren’t fun anyway. Not every game needs to be finished. Though if I am enjoying a game, I don’t mind playing it as much as I can. Hence, playing more than half a dozen games to get to current one. 😀

Sounds like I’m (at least) already there, I’ve been gaming since I was a kid and can count on one hand the number of things over the years I’ve let go. Including all the cardboard from every game and system I purchased.

I’m also with you on your philosophy regarding finishing games. I play to play, and it doesn’t matter if the game is over or I get 100% completion. And if I come across a game in my library that I don’t enjoy… I still don’t get rid of it, I may come back a year or two later and find that it clicks with me then. 🤷🏻

Yeah, sometimes you just aren’t in the right mood. So, re-visiting the game can make you like it more.

Family tends to do that. But I heard when the little ones enter teenages, you get a lot more free time. Haven’t reached that stage yet myself though, so it’s just anecdotal.

Yeah, I never played it. As far as I know, it was only officially released in Japan, and AFAIK the hacked versions you could play outside of Japan were pretty broken by the lack of proper online functionality. I sit in this weird grey area of being disappointed that we didn’t get it released in the US, but also being aware that we probably dodged a bullet with that, and we might not be getting Fantasy Life i at all if the mobile game damaged the franchise here.

Wow. It can’t have been good at all for it to have flown completely under my radar. I just remember a lot of disappointment when it released in Japan that it was a gacha game that had next to nothing to do with the original gameplay-wise.

It’s a light ARPG where you can freely swap from a variety of jobs that determine what skills and abilities you have. Unlike most other games in the genre, Fantasy Life has a substantial focus on skills beyond combat. There are basically three different classifications for jobs: gatherers, who have abilities suited to gathering specific types of materials, producers, who use those materials for crafting goods, tools, and weapons, and combat classes. All classes can fight, but combat classes specialize in fighting at the cost of being largely useless for everything else. It’s a very fun and rewarding loop to develop all of the jobs so you can maximize what things you can do, but it’s also completely valid to beat the entire game playing as any job. I beat the game as an angler/fisherman just to see that it could be done.

I have the original and bought the DLC before the eShop closed. I love the game, but got about half way before I got distracted and lost my place. I know that I can replay cut scenes (and the story is not that important), but I feel like it would be better for me to restart from scratch. I just need to get it back to the front of my game queue.

If I ever manage to complete it, I will probably get the sequel to celebrate.

Yeah, don’t know anything about the original, but this one is on my radar. That being said, there are so many casual, “farming” games coming out these days, I am going to look at the reviews before making up my mind.

The original Fantasy Life had no farming. It was an action RPG with a large emphasis on goods gathering and equipment crafting… which is an even more crowded genre, now days. What sets it apart is that it is less about combat but crafting and gathering are core classes that you will want to level.

Interesting. That sounds fun. I still have Rune Factory 4 on pause though, maybe I should switch to it after finishing New Super Mario U. There are too many interesting games coming out in genre, which I am not getting because I haven’t finished RF4.
